Over the past few weeks I've finished up research, finished the pamphlet and helped Grace with the social media launch. Since my last update I’ve learned that making a successful social media account is really hard. You can follow as many people as you want, but they may not follow you back. How are you supposed to make a difference and post the relevant information you want to, if no one is looking at it. However, I’ve also learned that talking to people, face to face, and hosting voter registration drives can make a big difference as well and can sometimes be more beneficial.
During this week, I finished the pamphlet in Photoshop. It was a huge learning curve for me to attempt Photoshop. I have always struggled with this application but I went for it and devoted a significant amount of time to making the pamphlet something I was proud of. I then printed 30, three fold pamphlets and we used them at our voter registration drives. Because not many were taken, I had the idea of leaving them at the front office for people to take at their convenience, so we’ll see if that’s an option. The pamphlets have information on 5 topics with each of the main candidates points of views. Grace and I collectively did two voter registration booths at Animas this week. Darren, our mentor, came and sat with us, so that he could make sure all the forms were accurate and well done. Over both days Grace and I registered 33 people to vote. We had no idea, going into it, how it would turn out, but we both felt accomplished and happy with what we did after it was over. We are now figuring out where else we could set up drives to see if we can raise that number even more. Finally, we set up our Baby Let’s Vote twitter account. We began to follow all the relevant people in the political world as well as many people that we know locally.
The challenges we are running into as the project draws to an end is firstly, the social media campaign. It’s hard to make a successful Twitter about Politics aimed at youth. There is this mindset in Durango of total ignorance toward anything remotely relevant in many of the high school youth and they aren’t interested in being apart of the Baby Let’s Vote movement. Grace and I want to find a way to get around that and show them that being apart of your country’s government and democracy is cool! The other struggle we’re running into is deciding on whether or not we can have other voter registration booths either at the Fort or at DHS. We are in the process of reaching out and hearing back from both to see if it’s even an option for us. We will hopefully know by the beginning of next week so we can plan accordingly.

This is what our pamphlets look like.
