PROJECT REFLECTION:
REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
How is art used in everyday life?
Art is used all the time, even when we don’t know it. It is used when people are trying to show something that can’t put into words. It is used to beautify and understand the world around you more. Art is also used in architecture, graphic design, technology and scientific studies. But there’s another aspect to art that I don’t think is as prominent. That is the notion that everything is art. I believe that everything that can be seen as beautiful or things that are seen as ugly and distorted are all art. Art are things or pieces or people that make you think deeper. This can be in the form of flower vines against the backdrop of a rusting gate. It can be an old deserted house. Art can be the way a table is laid out. It’s everywhere all the time and you have to have the eye to see the potential for it.
How and why is art used as a vehicle for communication?
Art is used as a vehicle for communication because I believe that in some ways art, in any form, can be more powerful than words. A picture’s worth 1,000 words people say. A reason I believe it is used for communication is because art can be interpreted in many different ways. Each person is impacted in a new way. Art can be universal, it is a language within itself. Sometimes the artist is trying to convey a message and it’s for the viewer to find out what that is. Finally, because art is visual it can evoke more powerful emotions through the imagery or lack of in the piece.
What problem-solving skills are employed in making works of art?
A lot of 21st Century Skills go into making a work of art. Decision making, imagination and critical thinking are a few key components. Also testing out, comparing and contrasting and experimenting with different ideas, variables and ways to do things are important.
How are the characteristics and expressive features of art and design used to create art?
Artists are always gathering information and inspiration from other artists. The characteristics and expressive features help us to analyze and understand pieces of art better. Understanding the art elements and principles can help us to not only understand pieces of art better but to also create a balanced and visually stimulating artistic rendering. These elements and principles come out of the expressive features of art and design. In order to understand a piece fully you have to know about the artist, his theories and what artistic elements and principles he was using or expanding on. This is all the “expressive features of art and design” and we use it all to form our own works of art.
Why do Artists Produce Preliminary Plans? (sketches, brainstorms, storyboards, etc?)
Artists create preliminary plans to get their initial ideas from their heads to the paper. They do it so they have something tangible to work with. A lot of time their preliminary plans will not be anything like their final idea but it gets the juices flowing.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION/PERSONAL REFLECTION:
I originally had no idea where to start on this project. It felt so overwhelming and to be completely honest the rubric was a little scary. My group and I brainstormed a lot of time on what we should do and film, probably a little too much time. In the end we barely used any of our original ideas. Finally we just started and we created ideas that would work as we went. The most helpful thing on this project was the project objectives and rubric. It was so clear and understandable as to what we needed to include. I did find my group and I scrambling at the end to include everything and putting random, sometimes unnecessary clips just so we could meet a requirement on the rubric. The instructional videos were helpful but the one on one time spent reviewing the videos with someone knowledgeable in video editing or in Adobe applications was the most helpful to me. This project was a struggle for me because I mostly was just stressed about meeting the requirements on the rubric and I don’t feel that I contributed as much as I could have to the video editing standpoint of the project. I did learn a lot about ways in which to make a video and the important components to include. Using what I’ve learned I feel confident I will be able to make a video again with little help.

POLITICAL CARTOON PROJECT:
|
|
PROJECT REFLECTION:
To start off this project I had no idea what I wanted my political cartoon to be. I was intrigued by the idea of a political cartoon but I really struggled to find a way to portray my thoughts. After struggling and making multiple cartoons I was not happy with, I came to a conclusion. My final political cartoon is an image of an Orca, swimming out of a teardrop. This is supposed to show that the Orca wants and needs freedom and that the space he is kept in is claustrophobic. The teardrop is red because it signifies the blood spilled while these Orcas are in captivity. The top of the teardrop shows the bending of the fin, rather than the straight up fin that happens to the Orcas overtime in captivity. The scratches on the Orcas side say SeaWorld in blood. I feel I met the project objectives, although I could’ve been a little more timely on my decision making. I first hand drew this cartoon and then used Photoshop and Illustrator to refine it.
I feel information can be shared artistically not only in political cartoons, but also in other forms of art. If you want to portray a message or a feeling in a piece of art, any kind, it is up to the artist how they want to do that. It’s important to remember that simplicity is better and the point is more direct when showing information in art. Information can be shared in images and words. Political cartoons though are a powerful way of showing a particular opinion. For political cartoons and other forms of art, when sharing information, it is important to use exaggeration, stereotyping and metaphors. This makes the viewer really think about the message you’re showing.
Creating art differs from viewing art because it has a different effect on each person or side. Creating art has a more personal touch to it, it’s coming from the heart of the artist or at least the brain of the artist. The artist most likely feels passionately about what it is they’re creating and they have a specific opinion or idea. The viewer is seeing it with no biased, they have a clean eye. The don’t know, at first usually, the back story or the feelings this artist had while creating it. They could see a piece of art in a completely different way than the artist intended and the art piece will most definitely have a different impact on the viewer than it did the artist. The difference is what each person gets out of it.

PRE-HISTORIC PROJECT:
PROJECT REFLECTION:
We started this project with a study and lecture about prehistoric life. We also watched a video called “Man Created Dog”. Looking back on the project, I realize how interesting it was for me to really look into the way in which the Prehistoric people lived and the way in which there art meant something, even today. I’ve never realized or accepted the beauty that cave art holds. It’s our history, it’s how we know people existed and civilization began and to me that’s beautiful. The “Man Created Dog” video showed me how human progression also contributed to the domestication of the dog. We were then asked to draw a prehistoric animal. I chose to draw a tribal wolf, using a handout of a tribal wolf as an outline. After drawing this with charcoal, I opened it in Adobe Illustrator. I then added different Image Trace options on it. I feel that these Image Traces really refined my work and made my drawing more clean around the edges. It also enhanced the drawing in a way so that it will be more visually stimulating when displayed on the computer. I could definitely see myself using this tool in the future to refine and clean up my drawings. I learned a lot in this project, not only about Adobe Illustrator but about the cave people and their art and the importance behind it. I am now very intrigued to look deeper into art history.
PHOTOSHOP TUTORIALS:
- I warped a copy of the eye tooth using a transformation.
- I used another layer on top of the face. I used an eraser and the burn tool to enhance the affect.
- I used a paintbrush, eraser and the color adjustments tab to change the hair color.
- I used the pen tool and then played with the saturation of the selected area.
LANDSCAPE PROJECT:
Understanding Distance with Scale and Proportion
FOREGROUND, MIDDLE-GROUND AND BACKGROUND:
|
|
During this mini project I learned the element of space through three ideas. Without the ideas of foreground, middle ground and background in art and photography, distance would be hard to understand. The foreground is what is closest to you in the picture. There is contrast and you can visibly see texture. The colors and details are vibrant and obvious. The middle ground is less contrasted and vibrant. You can see no texture, but you can still make out individual objects. Middle ground is (pretty self explanatory) in between background and foreground. Therefore it is not as vibrant but also not as blended and distant as the background. The background is faded and you can longer see single objects. Everything is blended together, shapes and colors. There is little to no contrast , other than stark differences.
NAME PROJECT:
During this project I tried to find things that were abstractly the letters of my name. I then put them together using Photoshop.
