WHY I CHOSE ANIMAS
I chose Animas High School because moving here from Austin, Texas where I attended a Waldorf School, my parents and I thought it would be the best option for me in Durango. The Austin Waldorf School was pretty small and going to Durango High School felt very overwhelming. Animas is smaller, a closer community and that is something that I enjoy. As a result of this smaller environment I can build student/teacher relationships I may not have been able to develop at another school. I appreciate that the teachers are your equals to some extent, it makes the trust between students and teachers stronger. Another aspect of Animas High School that I enjoy is the project-based learning. The project-based “curriculum” lets me learn in my own way and it compliments my love of making art. I can incorporate art into many of my projects and I can use my imagination in many areas. I feel as though this type of learning will help the material and subjects to stick with me longer than it would if I just read a textbook. We are pushed to do our best and most “beautiful” work every day. We are also pushed to do things we did not think we were capable of at first. At Animas the students have a voice. It is truly up to us to have a good education and to change things that we may not like about how the school is run or an issue we may be having. Animas prepares us for our future in so many ways; the rigorous academics, finding a personal learning style, advocacy for yourself and becoming ambassadors for things we are passionate about in the world around us. I look forward to the next four years as an Osprey!
