A MOMENT IN TIME:
PROJECT REFLECTION:
The overall objective of this project was to highlight a moment in our lives that changed us or made us into who we are today. The catch: it could only be one page long and it required the inclusion of all the story grammar and different stylistic tools we learned about. It was a test on how we could bring our story to life in the most vivid way. Through revisions, multiple rough drafts and the learning of new techniques we came to write and portray the best story we possibly could at this time.
Stories are some of the most powerful pieces of writing because of the way they make us feel and care. To do this effectively it takes practice and the knowledge of how to use story grammar properly. Creating a strong story uses an equal balance of the following story grammar tools: setting, characters, initiating action, attempts, results, responses and dialogue. Once we learned how to use these tools, we put it to our own experience and that in itself made it so much more powerful. The moments chosen were powerful and hard lessons, sometimes happy moments, sometimes sad moments but they all were very personal and that passion shone through in the final stories. We refined our work using vivid verbs and eliminating telling phrases, instead showing our emotions and actions. Narrative writing in general can help me grow as writer because of the variety of tools needed to write a story. We can apply many of the stylistic tools used in stories to other types of writing. Writing short stories also guided me through learning how to be clear and concise within my writing instead of rambling on with unnecessary details. Finally it gives me a beautiful and eloquent way to share my experiences and stories with the greater world if I so choose.
For me this project was very challenging. I started out with an excessive amount of writing on this specific moment that means so much to me. It was very hard for me to pull out what the initiating action was or what attempts I as the character would make. It was an interesting lesson in really assessing what the important details to include were. After writing conferences, peer critiques and self critiques I finally reached a place with my writing that I was proud of and followed the requirements. Nothing is perfect however and if I could continue to change and revise my story I would find a way to weave the metaphor of a song throughout the entire story and for an extra challenge maybe even write my story in a metaphor completely. I appreciated the amount that we were forced to work with our writing even if there was an underlying frustration within us.
This project was a huge self reflection on a defining moment in my life. It reminded me and brought back huge emotions of nostalgia of my past life in a sense. I grew immensely in my writing and many of the tools I will continue to expand and develop through other pieces of writing. It taught me patience with my writing and how to value peer critiques. I think this was a good way to start the year and I am excited to see how I will continue to improve throughout the coming year.
