The biggest challenge I faced in this project was dreaming big and opening my mind to the endless possibilities. I struggle in general to put my ideas into motion and my passions into a reality. That didn’t change during this project. I first had a hard time deciding what to do in general. When Grace and I settled on what to do, I didn’t follow through with the brainstorms I originally had thought up and I didn’t reach for the “moonshot ideas” I had wanted. This frustrates me because I sometimes worry that that’s what will happen for the rest of my life and I’ll never be able to fully create something I’m proud of and have strived for. I didn’t overcome this, because I went again with a sub par, yet well done project instead of risking failure and going for something big. I think I was fearful that I would fail or people might think of me differently depending on what I did in the community. It is imperative that I do not feel that fear in the future as I do more projects and go after dreams in life. If I let it get to me I will not only be disappointed but I will be left feeling like I’ve done nothing, whether that is true or not.
Ten years from now when I look back on this project I will remember that only half of eligible voters actually vote. We wonder why certain laws are passed and politicians elected but if everyone used their voice it very well may be different. People say there voices don’t matter but that’s where they are wrong. The only reason they say that is because they aren’t using them. I hope that in ten years when I look back at the statistics I see that the numbers have changed for the better.
I think that schools across America should have 20% projects, it gives kids the tools and freedom to not only study what they want, but to learn how to self motivate and direct. This may be something they’ve never been exposed to. It’s possible they’ve never had the freedom to follow or find out what their passions are. As a young adolescent, I think that is one of the most important things to begin to discover about yourself. It’s showing youth that they are capable and they can do and create things without the help and guidance of an adult, micromanaging their every move. It’s empowering to a certain extent.
